Festivaletteratura has chosen SUM-X to carry books, newspapers, magazines and bottles of water throughout Mantua’s streets and alleys.

Since 1997, Festivaletteratura is one of the most important cultural events in Italy. Five days of meetings, readings, writers, guided tours, shows and concerts. The artists come to Mantua from everywhere in the World.

This year, the promoters decided to leave the old van. They’ll use our cargo-bike to provide the Festival locations, all around Mantua’s Historic Centre. In this way, they’ll make Festivaletteratura lighter for the environment.

A great surprise: on September 1st, in Friedtichshafen, an international jury awarded our SUM-X with the Eurobike Award 2021, in the category “Cargo-Bikes”.

It’s an enormous satisfaction, which comes from the most important European fair for companies in the bicycle and mobility sector.

SUM-X was chosen among 250 vehicles for its fundamental contribution in terms of technological innovation, environmental and economic sustainability, efficiency and durability.

Production manager Milo Cargnelli says:

«We are excited and enormously satisfied: the Eurobike Award rewards us for many years of study, application, self-criticism, improvements.

We created SUM-X to develop the idea of a lighter and non-impacting logistics in the bicycles sector; our cargo bike is the lightest on the market, minimizing the consumption while optimizing the energetic efficiency.

With SUM-X we can carry over 250 kilos of load on a vehicle weighing just 45 kg: no motor vehicle can boast such numbers».

DIEGO BRUNELLO, THE DESIGNER

SUM-X designer Diego Brunello says more:

«For ten years we have been dealing with cargo-bike maintenance, repairs, consulting. We have studied the technical problems of cargo bikes used for deliveries and transport, listened to the couriers, treasured every word and every experience.

In 2019 we started the SUM project with the purpose of optimizing maintenance, making it more practical and efficient, and at the same time freeing urban centers from heavy traffic, noise and dangerous emissions: and in fact SUM-X records the lowest PM₄ and PM₂․₅ emissions among the cargo bikes on the market.

The Eurobike jury awarded the nature of the project. In fact SUM-X is a vehicle specifically designed for last mile logistics: quick replacements for logistics players, ergonomic driving position, 4 wheels for greater stability and a high safety of the driver. SUM-X offers a curve radius of just 4 meters, less than half that of an electric van: a nice advantage when you have to move between alleys, cobblestones and arcades».

5 REASONS WHY THE ELECTRIC CARGO BIKE IS GREENER THAN THE ELECTRIC VAN

To understand why a human / electric hybrid propulsion cargo bike is actually more ecologic than any other electric vehicle, it’s better to analyze the differences in performance and environmental impact:

1. The electric van needs specific infrastructure to make the best of it. E.g: it needs fast charging stations to complete a full day’s work.
2. SUM-X needn’t fast charging stations: a common electric plug is enough. It can be recharged during the night, to be ready to last for the next full working day.
3. In fact, SUM-X is able to mount a second full-charged battery onboard without compromising the cargo capacity. The battery can be replaced in a few seconds, in case you forgot to recharge the battery at night.
4. Surprise: data show that cargo bikes and electric vans also produce emissions into the atmosphere. It’s PM2.5, PM10 and PTS, although we’re talking of much less impact than petrol or diesel vehicles. On electric vehicles we focus on the brakes and the tyres that are responsible for the emissions, coming from their weight pushing onto the road surface. A cargo bike, even at maximum load, weighs considerably less than an electric van. SUM-X, on the other hand, is the lightest cargo bike on the market: it weighs about 47 kilograms empty. Roughly 33 times less than an electric van.
5. If SUM-X weighs less, the emissions are reduced and the road surface of the city centres is less consumed. The maintenance of our historic centers costs a lot to the municipalities, and therefore to the citizens, and SUM-X contributes to save them from frequent repairing interventions.

SUM-X IS QUIET AND LESS INVASIVE

The cargo bike is not only ecologic. Its sustainability is also given by producing less noise pollution than the electric van. And it’s also less invasive for the urban landscape.
In addition, the driver of a cargo bike is less isolated from other vehicles and the downtown community. In short: SUM-X is the most sustainable way to experience last mile logistics.

For all these reasons, the cargo Bike is the vehicle that best portrays the evolution of the delivery and transport industry, bringing our precious historic centers back to life, in a finally smart and green perspective.

Bergamo and Bilbao hosted the first trial of the European project Inclusiv_eBike. One Less Van’s SUM-X electric cargo bikes have been chosen as technical partners because of their extraordinary versatility and load capacity.

The road belongs to everyone, and everyone – even the slowest people – has the right to travel it, especially on a bicycle. SUM-X fitted in the spirit and mission of the Inclusiv_eBike project, resulting in the most suitable vehicle to satisfy the requirement of maneuverability and safety on the road. SUM-X achieved these qualities thanks to the unique modular structure and technologically performing materials.

In addition to One Less Van, the Inclusiv_eBike project involved the municipalities of Bergamo and Bilbao, Tecnalia (project leader(, the R&D sectors of Bosch Vhit, Axiro Italia and AESS, in synergy with non-profit associations operating in the Orobic region and in the Basque one.

SUM-X is the most innovative and sustainable solution for the new needs of mobility inside and outside the urban centers: safe in traffic, agile where other vehicles hardly move.
